Origin and design
The idea for the Jerry came from Laure Guillou, Xavier Auffret and Chemsedine Herriche, three students at ENSCI-les ateliers. The very first Jerry, designed as part of the Humanitech challenge, a student competition for humanitarian invention, won in 2011. Since then, the Jerry has become a freely customizable platform, adaptable to a variety of uses, whether as a desktop, a personal computer or a server to host client/server applications and projects.
Objectives and impact
The Jerry embodies several key objectives :
Fighting the digital divide: By providing a low-cost information system, it gives more people access to technology.
Reducing environmental pollution: Made from recycled computer hardware, the Jerry contributes to the fight against pollution and global warming.
Hands-on training: It offers a new vision of training by doing, enabling users to learn by doing.
Knowledge sharing: The project encourages collaboration and the sharing of ideas.
Sustainable development: By recycling electronic waste, the Jerry gives a second life to these materials, thus contributing to sustainable development.
JerryClan Ivory Coast
JerryClan Côte d'Ivoire is a group of free software and open hardware enthusiasts, determined to share this useful and ingenious invention with the world. Their main targets include young entrepreneurs, students and local institutions.
Activities and achievements
JerryClan Côte d'Ivoire regularly organizes workshops to popularize the use of the Jerry and train people in its design. The manufacturing steps are simple and accessible even to novices: collecting the components, cutting the can, attaching the components, and installing the free operating system during Install-Parties.
The operating system chosen by JerryClan Côte d'Ivoire is Emmabuntüs, a complete distribution including an office, educational and multimedia suite, easily deployable even without an optimal Internet connection.
Innovative projects
Despite financial and material challenges, JerryClan Côte d'Ivoire has completed several remarkable projects, recognized both nationally and internationally:
m-pregnancy : an SMS application for monitoring pregnancies
JerryTub : A platform facilitating the management of tuberculosis patients.
OpenDjeliba : A collaborative platform for the participatory production of citizen information by SMS, winner of a Prix de la Francophonie.
All these innovative projects are hosted on Jerry, demonstrating the versatility and efficiency of this invention.
The Jerry Do-It-Together project isn't just a technological solution; it's a movement towards a more sustainable and inclusive future. By incorporating recycling practices, using open-source software and promoting hands-on education, the Jerry embodies a technological revolution accessible to all. Join JerryClan Côte d'Ivoire and take part in this adventure where every can can make a difference for the environment and humanity.
